While standard platforms adhere to established industry guidelines, custom, non-standard sizes demand a careful engineering assessment of thickness relative to the surface area. It is a fundamental truth in metrology: when demanding high flatness and certified precision, the thickness simply cannot be compromised. Attempts to arbitrarily reduce the thickness-whether to cut cost or reduce weight-are counterproductive and ultimately jeopardize the component's utility.
When a granite reference plate is thinner than industry standards dictate, it becomes highly susceptible to damage during transportation and vulnerable to micro-deformation during the rigorous grinding and lapping processes. More importantly, even if our master craftsmen achieve the required high precision within our temperature-controlled workshops, an under-thickness slab lacks the necessary bulk to resist external forces. The precision level becomes unstable, shifting noticeably due to temperature gradients or slight shock, rendering the platform unsuitable for the customer's demanding production requirements upon delivery.
We champion the use of our naturally grown, high-density UNPARALLELED® Black Granite (Density ≈ 3100 kg/m³). However, even superior granite must be supported by sound engineering. Preserving Precision: Essential Protection for Your Granite Investment
A granite metrology platform is a long-term investment, and proper care ensures the preservation of its structural and dimensional integrity. Protection strategies must be carefully tailored to the platform's usage environment.
For environments involving wet installation (a rare but necessary process for certain structural components), it is paramount to select protective agents that do not compromise the color of the granite or the adhesion properties of the cement-to-slab bond. Crucially, the back and side surfaces of the slab require a quality waterproofing agent to prevent moisture ingress, which can lead to degradation over time.
For all granite components, whether dry-laid or structural, the front surface protection should align with the application. In general, public or manufacturing environments require products offering exceptional stain-resistance and oil-resistance to facilitate easy cleaning after contamination. Furthermore, granite types that are known to be vulnerable to moisture, such as certain lighter granites, demand an enhanced waterproofing treatment to mitigate the risk of corrosion or flaking.
