What is Precision Granite

A precision granite is a specialized type of surface plate used for measuring and inspecting dimensional accuracy and flatness of mechanical parts and assemblies. It is typically made of a solid block of granite, which is highly stable and resists deformation even under heavy loads and temperature changes.Precision granites are widely used in industrial applications such as metrology, machine shops, and aerospace engineering. They are essential tools for ensuring the precision and accuracy of machined parts and assemblies, as well as for verifying the performance of equipment and instruments. One of the key advantages of precision granites is their high degree of flatness and surface quality.

Benefits of Precision Granite

1. It is mainly stable in accuracy and convenient in maintenance. The structure of the granite slab is meticulous, the surface is smooth and wearable, and the roughness value is small.

2. The granite plate is naturally aged for a long time, the internal stress disappears, the material is not disordered, and it will not be deformed.

3. Acid, alkali, corrosion, diamagnetic; will not be rusted by moisture, easy to use and maintain; linear expansion coefficient is small, affected by temperature is small.

4. After the working surface is impacted or scratched, only pits will be generated, no ridges or burrs will be produced, and there is no influence on the measurement accuracy.

5. Granite plate is taken from the underground marble layer , after hundreds of millions of years of aging, the shape is extremely chaotic,do not worry about the deformation due to the conventional temperature difference through strict physical testing and selection of granite, fine crystal, hard texture, The compressive strength is 2290-3750 kg square centimeter and the hardness is 6-7 grades.

Why Use Granite As Components for Precision Machinery?

Because of its physical stability, fine structure and organization, granite components have the characteristics of abrasion resistance, high temperature resistance, high precision, no deformation, and easy maintenance. They are suitable for the on-site working environment of precision machinery and can maintain the accuracy of the product itself for a long time. It can better determine the accuracy of processing and testing in the working environment, and ensure the quality of the product, especially for high-precision measurement.

In the measurement of granite mechanical components, it slides smoothly, without a sense of stagnation, and has high accuracy. General scratches do not affect the measurement accuracy. Its stone has the characteristics of no rust, acid and alkali resistance, good wear resistance, and long service life. No special maintenance is required.

How to Choose Precision Granite

Color

Precision granite comes in various colors. The colors of granite on the market include gray, reddish brown, yellow, black, green, etc. The choice of color can be determined based on personal preference and home decoration style, but generally speaking, granite with uniform, full, and bright colors is more beautiful.

Texture

The texture of precision granite determines the texture pattern on the granite surface. There are various textures, including crystal, block, plate, band, etc. There are also some granites with intricate textures that are difficult to describe. When choosing granite, you need to pay attention to the beauty of the texture, the distribution of the texture, and the coherence of the texture.

Hardness

Hardness is an important measure of the density of precision granite and the mineral content within it. Harder granite also generally has a higher density and better beauty. Granite with higher hardness is more durable and more suitable for home use.

Density

The density of precision granite is generally between 2.5-2.8g/cm³. For the same kind of granite, the greater the density, the more ingredients it contains, the more evenly distributed it is, and the higher its beauty.

How to Ensure The Accuracy of Precision Granite

1

Precision Matters
Manufacturing facilities as well as calibration labs rely on surfaces to be precise. At a minimum, surface plates should exceed federal specification ASME B89.3.7. Surface plate suppliers should have completed a stringent training program and participate in annual proficiency testing to consistently produce high-quality products.A NIST traceable calibration certificate supplied with the surface plate is an important quality benchmark. And if required, an A2LA accredited certificate should be issued for any calibrations that are within the ISO/IEC 17025 scope.

2

Initial Inspection
Before taking ownership of a surface plate, review the final inspection process with your supplier. It is recommended that plates are inspected with an autocollimator or electronic levels and . Some suppliers offer surface plates that far exceed what is required. For example, black and pink plates might be engineered to support a loading weight of 100 lbs. per square foot (PSF), loaded in the centre of the plate, which is twice as much as what is required by federal specification. This means that the designated load may be placed in the centre of the plate without deflecting the overall accuracy more than 50 per cent.

3

Surface Plate Support
To ensure accurate readings, granite surface plates must be properly supported on three or four points as specified in ASME B89.3.7. The standard work height for stands is generally 36 in., and it is recommended to use floor locks for all castered stands. There are several options for supporting the plate.Tubular steel surface plate stands are constructed from welded square steel tubing for exceptional strength and durability. Steel crossbeams are located at the proper support points to ensure maximum surface plate accuracy. Cabinet support stands are built with square steel tubing and heavy-gauge steel for durability. Drawer stands may be available as well.

4

Custom Configurations
When the application calls for a plate with custom shapes, threaded inserts, slots, or other machining, you'll want to thoughtfully and carefully select your supplier to guide you through the customization process. Identify a supplier with engineers who have the knowledge to understand your precision base needs and can add the value of their experience to optimize designs for both performance and cost.

Introduction to Precision Granite Processing Methods

01/

Machining
Mechanical processing is the most basic processing method, usually using power tools, cutting machines, drilling machines, grinders, polishing machines and other equipment. This processing method is easy to operate and is suitable for making simple granite components, inlays, floor tiles and wall panels.

02/

Flame blasting
Flame blasting uses high-temperature flame spray to melt the rock surface, and uses compressed gas or liquid water to cool it to change the rock surface to achieve the purpose of processing. This processing method is not conducive to processing granite with large shape changes.

03/

Waterjet cutting
Waterjet cutting uses high-pressure water flow to control the flow rate and flow rate of the water to cut granite. This processing method can achieve the advantages of high precision, fast speed, and small thermal impact, and is suitable for carving and carving complex curved surfaces of granite.

04/

Hand carved
Hand carving is a traditional granite processing method. It is carefully carved by hand using knives. It has good expressive power and can achieve very complex effects. However, due to the need for manual operation, the processing speed is slow, and issues such as tool wear and damage need to be considered during the processing.

How to Maintain Precision Granite

Keep it clean and free of debris
Any debris or contaminants on the Precision Granite surface can affect the accuracy of the measurements. Therefore, it is essential to keep the granite bed clean and free of debris, such as dust, dirt, and other particles. A gentle cleaning with a damp cloth is usually enough to maintain its cleanliness.

Regularly inspect the bed for any cracks or chips
Precision Granite is a durable material, but it can still develop cracks or chips over time, especially if exposed to constant heavy loads or impacts. Regular inspection can help detect any damage in the earlier stages and address them before they become more significant and affect the accuracy of the CMM.

Ensure proper leveling
The accuracy of a bridge CMM is heavily dependent on its leveling on the granite bed. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that the granite bed remains level, and any changes in its level should be addressed immediately. An uneven bed can cause inaccuracies in the measurements, leading to costly errors, delays, and repairs.

Keep the temperature stable
Precision Granite is prone to expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. Therefore, it is essential to maintain a stable temperature in the room where the bridge CMM is located. Any sudden temperature changes can cause the granite bed to contract or expand, which can affect the accuracy of the measurements.

Perform regular recalibration
Recalibration is an essential part of maintaining the accuracy of a bridge CMM. Regular recalibration can help detect any deviations and adjust the settings to ensure continued precision. Consider recalibrating your machine at least once a year or as recommended by the manufacturer.

Precautions For Use Of Precision Granite

Before use

The working surface of the granite platform should be cleaned first, and the surface of the granite table should be wiped to avoid impurities falling on the working surface, which would affect the detection and measurement results. When testing the workpiece on a granite platform, handle it gently. The impact on the place where the workpiece is placed will cause damage to the workpiece and the granite surface plate .After the workpiece is inspected or measured, the workpiece should be taken down in time, and not placed on the granite platform for a long time. Long-term partial stress will destroy the overall flatness. If it is not used for a long time, it should be cleaned and put into the packing box. When carrying anything else, be careful when passing the platform to avoid the granite platform being hit.

FAQ

Q: How do you clean precision granite?

A: Use a clean cloth for best results. Clean stone surfaces with a neutral cleaner, such as mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and wipe until dry with a soft cloth.

Q: Can I use on my granite countertops?

A: Since granite countertops have a sealant on them to keep them shiny and stain-resistant, you want to avoid using anything too acidic or basic on the granite. Frequent use of vinegar, bleach will dull the granite and weaken the sealant. Instead, a little soap and water should do the trick.

Q: Which is better granite or Corian?

A: For example, granite may chip under extreme impacts, unlike Corian, but it withstands hot items that could melt Corian's acrylic surface. Likewise, Corian's nonporous surface resists staining without yearly sealing; however, granite offers greater scratch protection.

Q: How often should a Precision Granite be calibrated?

A: Every six months to three years
Depending on the workload, surface plates should be calibrated every six months to three years. To determine what calibration schedule is best for you, regularly test your plate with a repeat-o-meter to check how quickly your plate deviates outside of accepted tolerances.

Q: How do you calibrate a granite surface plate?

A: Place a repeat measuring gauge on the center of the granite surface plate. Zero the repeat measuring gauge to the surface of the granite plate. Move the gauge slowly across the surface of the granite. Watch the gauge's indicator and record the peaks of any height variations as you move the instrument across the plate.

Q: Can you use vinegar on granite?

A: Vinegar is made up of acids that can severely harm your granite. Even if it is diluted, vinegar may still leave acids on your granite countertops. This can cause your natural stone countertops to etch. You can tell that your granite countertops have begun to etch by seeing a small ring or some sign of a watermark.

Q: Will rubbing alcohol damage granite?

A: Rubbing alcohol is a natural bactericide and can also kill fungus and viruses. It has no ill effects on your granite or the seal on your granite so it's an ideal way to keep countertops clean. The list of disinfectants that are harmful for granite countertops is very long.

Q: What is the best countertop material for the money?

A: For cost-efficient, long-term countertop options, consider granite and other natural stone materials. Sheets of granite are smooth, durable and heat-resistant, making this the perfect material to use in your kitchen.

Q: What looks like granite but is less expensive?

A: Quartz countertops are some of the most popular alternatives to granite countertops. Generally, quartz counters combine the crystalline mineral with rock binders and a polyresin resulting in a natural stone look. This type of countertop is well-suited for contemporary spaces.

Q: What is the best product to make granite shine?

A: A water and isopropyl alcohol solution is an excellent choice for shining and disinfecting even the dirtiest surfaces. An effective solution contains equal parts water and isopropyl alcohol. Simply mix the ingredients together and spray them onto the granite surface.

Q: Can you set hot plates on granite?

A: Granite is naturally heat resistant, and heat damage would occur only if the granite was heated unevenly. So briefly putting a hot pan down on your granite countertop isn't going to cause long-term damage. That said, we don't recommend putting hot pans on granite countertops — not for the granite's sake but for yours.

Q: Is there a lot of upkeep to granite countertops?

A: The good news is there isn't much to learn when deep-cleaning your granite countertops. For all its temperamental qualities, natural stone is quite easy to clean; regular soap and water are truly all you need to keep granite surfaces clean and sparkling.

Q: Do granite countertops need to be sealed periodically?

A: You most likely need to reseal your granite countertops at least once a year. However, these factors could affect how often you need to apply a new protective layer to your stone surfaces: Type of granite: Your one-of-a-kind granite countertops have unique maintenance requirements based on their porosity.

Q: What is the life expectancy of granite countertops?

A: Around 100 years
A well-maintained granite countertop should survive for around 100 years or more. The key statement here is “well-maintained.” While granite can withstand the typical day-to-day wear and tear, granite countertops do require some maintenance to ensure their sustainability similar to most things of value.

Q: What is the difference between pink and black granite surface plates?

A: All granite is not the same, and depending on the type, have different wear characteristics. There is Black, Pink or Starrett Crystal Pink. The Black Granite or Diabase is harder than the other granites. The modulus of elasticity is 9.5 x 10 to 6th power comparing to the Crystal Pink which is 3.8 x 10 to the 6th power.

Q: Can you put hydrogen peroxide on granite?

A: Mix baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and warm water in a bowl until there is a thick paste. Though commonly used as a wound disinfectant, hydrogen peroxide also works wonders on your granite tops. A solution of hydrogen peroxide removes stains without bleaching or discoloring your countertops.

Q: What is the longest lasting countertop?

A: Precision Granite is the most durable countertop material. A perfect choice for any kitchen or bathroom, quartz countertops contain a mixture of crushed quartz and resin. These materials create diverse appearance options that range from vibrant, customizable colors to the tried-and-true natural finish.

Q: What is precision granite used for?

A: A precision granite is a specialized type of surface plate used for measuring and inspecting dimensional accuracy and flatness of mechanical parts and assemblies.Every measurement depends on an accurate surface reference from which dimensions are taken, and granite plates offer the perfect base for gaging surfaces and making accurate height measurements.

Q: What is calibrated granite?

A: The more workshops use granite surface plates, the more they change with wear and tear. Granite surface plate calibration works to manage and reverse these changes to keep surfaces level and readings accurate. Calibration work falls into two categories: maintenance and formal calibration.

Q: What is the difference between granite and engineered granite?

A: Unlike natural granite, which has flaws and irregularities, engineered granite has a uniform, consistent look. And since it is engineered, it can be designed in a spectrum of colors, patterns, and designs. Imagine getting the look you want, when you want it.The highest accuracy plates are called Grade AA, and they are often found in calibration laboratories. Grade B plates are the lowest accuracy plates, and they might be found on shop floors. The middle grade plates, Grade A, are often used in inspection areas.
