Granite is an igneous rock, formed from slowly cooled magma, with a much harder, denser crystalline structure. That density - often cited in the 2,900–3,100 kg/m³ range for high-quality black granite - is what gives it superior vibration damping, wear resistance, and long-term dimensional stability under repeated loading.
Why This Matters for a Surface Plate
A surface plate or measuring base isn't a static object - it gets loaded, unloaded, and probed thousands of times over its service life. Under that kind of repeated mechanical stress:

None of this makes marble a bad material generally - it's simply the wrong material for demanding metrology and machine-base applications, even though it can look nearly identical to granite once polished black.
How to Tell the Difference
For buyers without a materials lab on hand, a few practical checks help:
- Ask for a density certificate. Reputable granite suppliers can provide tested density figures; marble sold as granite typically can't clear the 2,900 kg/m³ threshold.
- Check hardness behavior. Granite resists scratching from a steel edge far better than marble.
- Ask about acid reactivity. A small, controlled test with a mild acid will visibly etch marble but not true granite - though this should only be done by the supplier under controlled conditions, not on a finished part.
- Request calibration traceability. A supplier confident in their material will readily provide flatness and density certificates traceable to a recognized metrology institute.
