If you are reading this, you have probably already decided to consider a mineral casting bed - so this article will not explain what mineral casting is. It answers the next question instead: once the material choice is made, how do you define the structure, the metal interfaces and the acceptance criteria so the project moves smoothly from drawing review to delivered bed?
1. Material System and Product Scope in This Article
The products discussed here are epoxy-resin mineral castings - aggregates bonded in an epoxy matrix, cast at room temperature into molds. This is the material behind our epoxy granite machine base line. It is related to, but not the same product as, polymer concrete bases or conventional cast iron structures, which we also supply and which follow different design and acceptance rules. Name the material system explicitly in your RFQ; "mineral casting" alone can mean different formulations from different suppliers.
2. Structure and Assembly Information the Customer Should Provide
A cast bed is designed around its function, so the more system context you give, the better the design: overall envelope and mass targets, which modules mount where, load cases (static, dynamic, center-of-gravity offsets), the intended support scheme, and the accuracy class the machine needs. A 3D model with proposed mold split direction helps the foundry engineer respond with a manufacturable proposal - wall thicknesses, draft, fillet radii and boss positions are all easier to negotiate before the mold is cut.
3. Embedded Inserts, Metal Interfaces and Post-Machined Areas
Inserts are the heart of a mineral casting project. Specify for every insert: thread and depth, bushing material, proof load, adhesive system, and electrical isolation where required. Mark which areas will be post-machined after casting - typically datum surfaces, guide rail seats and insert bosses. Cast-in inserts are positioned in the mold and then finish machined; heavy or precision-critical interfaces can also be installed in drilled and bonded pockets afterwards. Each route has different tolerance and lead-time implications, so the decision belongs in the drawing review, not in production.
4. Cast Structure Surfaces vs. Final Precision Reference Surfaces
This distinction causes the most confusion in mineral casting procurement. The as-cast surface has millimeter-scale waviness - it is a structure surface, not a datum. Precision reference surfaces are created afterwards by machining and finishing, typically after inserts are bonded so that machining stress does not distort them:
Mark on the drawing which surfaces are cast-only and which become datums. Asking for "flat" on a formwork surface is neither meaningful nor manufacturable; asking for a defined datum with a certified flatness value on selected surfaces is standard practice.
5. Agreeing Key Dimensions and Inspection Items
Agree the acceptance scope before the mold is made: which dimensions are measured and how, which datums the report references, which support condition applies during measurement, and what happens if a value disputes at incoming inspection. The example table below shows a typical acceptance item list for a custom bed:
6. Confirmation Documents from Drawing to Delivery
A well-run project has a document at each stage: design review minutes (tolerances, inserts, mold split agreed), mold or first-article approval for series projects, batch records for casting and bonding, the final certified inspection report, and packing records with support-point photos. Ask for these documents by name in the RFQ - a supplier who can produce them on request has the process control the project assumes.
