As experts in ultra-precision engineering, we emphasize that your measurement foundation begins not with the plate's surface, but with the sub-structure it rests upon. Achieving sustained, verifiable Metrology Accuracy requires careful attention to three critical foundation factors: load-bearing capacity, uniform support, and settlement prevention.

1. Load-Bearing Capacity: Beyond Simple Weight

A granite surface plate is inherently heavy; our high-density granite alone weighs approximately ≈3100 kg/m³. When you add the weight of the inspection fixture, the components being measured, and the gauges, the total load can be significant.

The Requirement: The foundation-whether a concrete slab or a dedicated steel stand-must possess sufficient structural rigidity to support the maximum anticipated load without localized deflection or elastic compression. A weak foundation introduces a risk of "creep" or micro-shifts that transfer dynamic stress directly into the plate, instantly compromising its certified flatness.

The Solution: Consult a structural engineer to ensure the floor slab's thickness and reinforcing meet or exceed the maximum combined static and dynamic load, with an adequate safety margin.

2. Uniform Support: Maintaining the Certified Plane

A common misconception is that the foundation must be perfectly flat. While a level floor is desirable, the most crucial factor is Uniform Support.

The Requirement: The floor or sub-frame must distribute the weight of the granite plate evenly across its contact points. 3. Settlement and Vibration Control: The Long-Term Challenge

The most difficult foundation challenge is maintaining stability over time, which requires addressing Settlement Prevention and Vibration Isolation.

Settlement: The foundation must be immune to movement from shifting soil, hydrostatic pressure, or adjacent construction activity. A shifting base will slowly twist the plate, destroying its calibration. For permanent, ultra-high-precision installations, the best practice is a monolithic concrete slab isolated from the building's main structural columns.

Vibration Control: This is paramount. Excessive vibration from machinery, traffic, or foot traffic will introduce dynamic errors into measurements.
