In the pursuit of measuring increasingly large workpieces-from aerospace components to major machine tool bases-the limitations of a single, monolithic granite surface plate often become apparent. When the object to be inspected exceeds the practical size of a quarry-sourced granite slab, engineers face a critical question: Can we use a "spliced" or "stitched" granite platform without compromising our required Grade AA or Grade A accuracy?

The Necessity of Splicing in Large-Scale Metrology

While a monolithic granite base is always the ideal gold standard for stability, physical and logistical constraints often require that large measuring surfaces (often exceeding 4,000 mm or 160 inches in length) be constructed from multiple granite segments.

This modular approach is necessary for several reasons:

Quarry Limits: Granite blocks of perfect metrology grade and uniform quality are difficult to source and transport above certain sizes.

Logistics & Installation: A single, massive plate is often too heavy and structurally inflexible to transport, maneuver, and install in a customer's facility.

Foundation Requirements: Splicing allows for the modular installation and leveling of extremely large systems, such as gantry CMM bases.

Does Splicing Affect Accuracy? The Technical Answer

In the hands of an inexperienced fabricator, splicing will undoubtedly destroy precision. However, utilizing specialized "seaming" or "stitching" technology, the flatness and positional integrity of the overall system can be assured, often meeting or exceeding stringent ASME B89.3.7 standards.

The joint itself is not a weak point, but a carefully engineered junction. The key to maintaining the overall flatness tolerance across the joint lies in three highly controlled steps:

1. Precision Machining of the Seam

Before assembly, the mating faces of the granite blocks are ground and lapped to extreme parallelism and squareness. This ensures the geometric relationship between the components is perfect before they are joined.

2. High-Stability Bonding and Stress Relief

The sections are joined using an advanced, high-strength, two-component structural epoxy. This adhesive is specially formulated to match the low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the granite itself (≈4.5×10⁻⁶/°C).

Crucially, the entire assembly undergoes a controlled stress relief and aging treatment after the bond cures. This step, which often involves controlled temperature cycling, ensures the adhesive layer does not introduce internal stresses that could lead to creep or long-term distortion of the composite structure.

3. Advanced Laser Calibration and Leveling

This is the most critical stage. After curing and rough assembly, the entire spliced platform is treated as a single, unified measuring base.

Active Alignment: The platform is precisely positioned using three-point support systems and micro-adjustable jacks to counteract any sag.

Laser Interferometry: A laser tracker or autocollimator is used to measure the overall straightness and flatness across the entire length, including the seam. Fine adjustments are made to the support system until the total flatness deviation adheres to the specified metrology grade (e.g., within 0.01mm/m or better).
