Precision motion mechanisms serve as the core execution units in semiconductor inspection stages, linear motor XY worktables, laser processing equipment and coordinate measuring machines. To achieve micron or even nanometer-level repeat positioning and high-speed dynamic motion for the complete set of mechanisms, it is not enough to rely solely on the performance of guide rails, gratings and drive modules. The rigidity of the base carrying the entire motion system is the underlying factor that determines the upper limit of dynamic accuracy. High-rigidity precision granite components act as indispensable bearing substrates for such precision motion mechanisms, delivering a stable and reliable supporting foundation for high-speed and high-frequency reciprocating motion.
Rigidity refers to the ability of a structure to resist deformation. When metal bases undergo rapid start-stop and fast reversing in high-speed precision mechanisms, minor elastic deflection will occur due to insufficient rigidity. Such instantaneous deformation is invisible to the naked eye, yet it directly amplifies positioning errors. Especially in long-travel and high-frequency dynamic motion scenarios, the accumulation of repeated deformation leads to accuracy drift and weakens the repeat positioning stability of equipment. In contrast, high-rigidity granite substrates feature dense crystals and a uniform internal structure with excellent elastic modulus. The deformation under external load is minimal. When linear motors and guide rail sliders reciprocate at high speed on the worktable, the granite base can effectively restrain instantaneous bending and torsional deformation, ensuring that the straightness of the guide rail benchmark remains unchanged during mechanism movement.
Apart from static bearing rigidity, the high rigidity of granite works together with its damping properties. During acceleration and deceleration, precision motion mechanisms generate vibration and resonance tendency. Ordinary metal bases are prone to resonance with slow vibration attenuation. Operators have to wait for a long time for stabilization, reducing the equipment's operating cycle. The high-rigidity granite matrix comes with superior internal damping. It quickly absorbs impact vibration produced by motion mechanisms and shortens the vibration decay time. After the mechanism completes positioning, the work surface can rapidly return to a stable state without a long waiting period for vibration dissipation. This improves equipment operating efficiency and measurement accuracy, perfectly matching high-demand dynamic applications such as femtosecond laser processing, semiconductor wafer inspection and perovskite coating.
For large long-travel precision motion equipment, the advantages of high-rigidity integrated granite components become more prominent. Large-span motion platforms adopting spliced metal or small split bases suffer weak rigidity at splicing joints and uneven load distribution, which easily causes structural deformation during movement. Integrated granite beds can be manufactured as large monolithic pieces without splicing gaps, delivering continuous and uniform overall rigidity. The complete set of guide rails and linear motor modules are assembled directly on the integrated granite reference surface, so loads can be evenly transferred to the whole base and dynamic deviation caused by partial insufficient rigidity can be avoided. Meanwhile, mounting reference surfaces for guide rails, air passages, T-slots and positioning holes can be prefabricated according to the design requirements of motion mechanisms, ensuring consistency between mounting benchmarks and motion benchmarks.
The long-lasting accuracy of high-rigidity granite bases also guarantees stable long-term operation of precision motion mechanisms. Under cyclic loads brought by continuous reciprocating motion, some materials will creep and cause slow benchmark offset. Fully stress-relieved granite substrates boast strong creep resistance. Their structure and reference surface will not deform slowly under long-term cyclic loads. Combined with nanoscale lapping technology, the reference surface can maintain flatness for a long time and greatly reduce the frequency of recalibration for motion mechanisms. Besides, the material is non-magnetic and resistant to minor oil stains and moisture in workshops. Its rigidity and benchmark accuracy can remain stable for a long time in complex environments such as semiconductor cleanrooms and precision optical production lines.
Nevertheless, high rigidity does not mean resistance to violent impact. Granite is relatively brittle. During hoisting and assembly of motion modules, supporting points need to be reasonably arranged and bolt preload must be controlled to prevent stone damage caused by concentrated local loads. If operated in accordance with precision assembly specifications, the high-rigidity advantages of granite bases can be fully exerted to continuously support the whole precision motion mechanism.
The dynamic accuracy of precision motion mechanisms originates from the rigidity performance of the base. Featuring high elastic modulus, outstanding deformation resistance, natural vibration damping and low creep, high-rigidity precision granite components effectively restrain deflection and vibration induced by high-speed movement and keep the guide rail benchmark stable. They build a solid supporting foundation for various long-travel, high-acceleration precision motion platforms and help ultra-precision equipment achieve stable and high-precision dynamic operation.
