Many CMM manufacturers initially opt for standard stone plates and machine columns and crossbeams by themselves. This approach may seem convenient, yet geometric mismatches often appear between structural components during machine assembly. Custom fabrication of granite components is far more than cutting stone according to drawings. It develops worktables, columns, crossbeams, guide rail reference surfaces and embedded mounting features as an integrated system, based on machine motion logic, load distribution and full three-axis geometric relationships. Each granite component arrives with ready-to-assemble references at delivery. Drawing from years of experience supporting metrology equipment, UNPARALLELED Group focuses the core value of custom granite components on pre-control of assembly compatibility and long-term stability.
Customization begins not with cutting, but structural simulation and material selection. CMMs with different travel ranges differ greatly in crossbeam span, motion load and layout of air bearings. Directly adopting generic stone cross-sections risks crossbeam sagging and excessive self-weight deformation. After receiving the client's 3D machine model, static and modal simulations are carried out to evaluate elastic deformation under self-weight and optimize cross-section, weight-reduction cutouts and support positions. For large gantry CMMs, crossbeam cross-section, wall thickness must be individually designed to balance rigidity and weight. Raw material inspection is strict: dense black granite with density of 3100kg/m³ is selected, with careful screening for tiny internal fissures and uneven mineral distribution to avoid localized stress concentration in service. Composite structures are available for special models, combining granite main bodies with ceramic Z-axis or carbon fiber auxiliary beams to balance rigidity, weight and cost.
Profile machining and integration of embedded threaded inserts represent the biggest technical challenges in custom fabrication. Standard stone processing only handles simple surface grinding, while CMM granite components require collaborative machining of guide rail reference planes, linear scale mounting surfaces, positioning steps, T-slots and deep holes on a single blank. Granite is hard and brittle. Drilling and grooving easily cause edge chipping and microcracks, weakening bonding strength of threaded inserts. Custom workflows pre-embed threaded inserts and locating sleeves into stone substrates and control assembly gaps, so clamping force distributes evenly without local substrate damage during bolt tightening. All reference planes, holes and positioning edges are machined under one unified datum system, eliminating accumulated errors from repeated re-clamping. Delivered components support direct fitting of guide rails, linear scales and motion modules and reduce on-site fitting and rework.
Multi-cycle aging and static settling during manufacturing guarantee long-term precision stability, which standard stone products cannot easily achieve. After rough machining, every granite component rests inside constant-temperature, vibration-isolated workshops to release stress induced by cutting and grinding before semi-finish and finish grinding. Large single-piece components go through segmented aging. After each grinding pass, components settle for full stress relaxation, form and position tolerances are re-measured. Machining only proceeds once no rebound deformation is confirmed. Multi-point conformal supports are applied during lapping to replicate real supporting conditions at the customer site. This ensures self-weight deformation after fixture removal matches simulation results and prevents unexpected geometry shift after delivery.
Final inspection for custom component sets adopts full-machine cascade verification instead of isolated single-piece testing. Ordinary stone plates are only checked for flatness. For complete CMM granite assemblies, besides flatness, straightness and perpendicularity of individual parts, geometric matching between worktables, columns and crossbeams is verified under simulated assembly states. Laser interferometers and high-precision electronic levels perform full-inspection, and complete metrology records are provided with traceable test instruments. Vacuum impregnation sealing can be added for workshop environments with dust and cutting mist to seal surface pores and improve resistance to oil and abrasive particles for production-line CMMs.
Many equipment manufacturers make a common mistake during granite customization: they focus merely on dimensional tolerances in drawings and overlook matching logic between parts. Passing inspection for a single part does not guarantee three-axis orthogonality after assembly. The core advantage of custom service is shifting geometric matching risks that normally appear in assembly upstream into design and manufacturing. From simulation optimization and raw material screening, embedded insert integration, segmented aging to full-set geometric verification, the whole workflow ensures stable three-axis geometry once worktables, columns and crossbeams are assembled and lowers uncertainty during machine commissioning.
Holding a complete portfolio of international certifications, UNPARALLELED Group manufactures custom granite CMM structural components according to client drawings and 3D models, for small bridge-type machines and large-travel gantry models. After delivery of full granite structural assemblies, equipment manufacturers can focus on motion systems, probes and electronic control development. Relying on stable granite mechanical bodies, they accelerate machine finalization and validation.
