In the fields of high-speed air-bearing linear motion platforms, optical scanning platforms and wafer inspection air-bearing worktables, the comprehensive performance of the substrate directly determines the running smoothness of air bearings, motion repeatability and long-term service stability. Many equipment manufacturers compare aluminum alloy, cast iron, ceramics and various stone materials repeatedly, and most of them finally select high-density black granite as the main substrate for air bearing platforms. It is widely known that granite delivers excellent vibration damping performance. However, few people realize that black granite possesses multiple core strengths that cannot be replicated by other materials under the special operating conditions of air bearing systems. UNPARALLELED has long specialized in customized ultra-precision granite components, supplying base frames, beams and worktables to air bearing equipment manufacturers worldwide. Drawing on abundant practical project experience, we analyze the unique value of black granite for air bearing platforms.
Air bearing systems realize non-contact movement relying on a thin layer of high-pressure gas. Tiny substrate deformation, surface micro-undulations and thermal deformation will directly lead to slider jitter and air pressure fluctuation. Aluminum alloy is lightweight yet features a relatively high thermal expansion coefficient, making the platform prone to deformation under ambient temperature changes. Cast iron boasts favorable rigidity, but suffers from corrosion risks during long-term service, excessive self-weight and limited damping capacity. Ceramics exhibit outstanding thermal stability, yet large-size monolithic forming is difficult with high machining costs. Ordinary light-colored granite has uneven internal mineral distribution and higher porosity, resulting in insufficient sealing after surface finishing, which makes it unsuitable for continuous gas supply of air bearing structures. In contrast, UNPARALLELED® black granite features densely and uniformly arranged crystals with extremely low porosity. After ultra-precision lapping, the platform surface achieves superior tightness, maintains uniform air film steadily, prevents local leakage of high-pressure gas and ensures continuous stable operation of air bearings.
Vibration suppression is an indispensable indicator for air bearing platforms. High-speed reciprocating motion and external workshop disturbances generate vibration. Once vibration transmits to the air-bearing worktable, it will destabilize the ultra-thin air film, degrade positioning accuracy and blur optical imaging. Vibration decays slowly and lasts longer in metallic materials. By comparison, black granite has inherent high damping properties; vibration energy can be rapidly absorbed by internal crystal interfaces of the stone, effectively lowering resonance risks. Especially for long-travel high-speed air bearing platforms, impact vibration generated during start and stop can be quickly attenuated by the granite substrate to keep the motion end stable at all times. This is a key reason why black granite is prioritized for air bearing platforms deployed in high-precision optical inspection and semiconductor metrology equipment.
Dimensional thermal stability determines the capacity of air bearing equipment for round-the-clock continuous operation. Workshops experience minor diurnal temperature fluctuations, and continuous equipment operation also generates slight heat. Black granite has an ultra-low thermal expansion coefficient, and its thermal expansion and contraction under temperature variation are far slighter than metal materials. Air bearing platforms contain precision micropores, air supply grooves and positioning reference surfaces. Any subtle deformation will alter the air bearing gap. Adopting black granite substrates minimizes air film thickness variation caused by thermal drift, reduces accuracy offset after prolonged equipment operation and cuts frequent calibration, adapting to 24-hour non-stop mass inspection in factories.
Air bearing platforms usually reserve air supply grooves, threaded mounting holes and vacuum adsorption zones, imposing strict requirements on the machinability and structural stability of substrates. Premium black granite features moderate hardness and homogeneous texture. It supports complex machining such as grooving, drilling and hollowing, and resists local stress concentration and cracking after processing. Besides, the material is oxidation-resistant and insensitive to humidity, eliminating the need for additional protective coatings and removing the risk of air film contamination caused by coating peeling. Many air bearing devices are deployed in cleanrooms. Black granite maintains stable physicochemical properties and will not release particulate contaminants, complying with dust-free production standards in the semiconductor and optoelectronic industries.
Monolithic forming further enhances the application value of black granite. Large long-travel air bearing beams and extra-large square air bearing worktables can be processed from a single stone blank to achieve seamless monolithic structures. Spliced structures inevitably contain interface gaps that easily trigger gas leakage. In addition, inconsistent stiffness at joints leads to uneven deformation under long-term loads. Monolithic black granite components avoid the above drawbacks with balanced overall rigidity and unified reference precision. Supported by a Class 10,000 constant-temperature humidity clean workshop, we conduct ultra-precision lapping and multi-dimensional accuracy testing to guarantee that the flatness and waviness of worktables meet stringent surface specifications required for air bearing operation.
No single material can fit all working conditions. Nevertheless, for air bearing motion platforms requiring sub-micron and nanometer precision, black granite integrates multiple characteristics including low expansion, high damping, low porosity, stable physicochemical performance and feasibility for large-scale monolithic machining, delivering irreplaceable comprehensive advantages. UNPARALLELED continuously optimizes the machining technology for black granite. We develop exclusive processing solutions targeting air supply grooves, sealing surfaces and mounting references of air bearing platforms, and provide long-term stable granite reference component solutions for high-end air bearing motion platforms.
