In semiconductor inspection equipment, optical measuring instruments and air-bearing linear motion platforms, granite reference components serve as the geometric benchmark of the whole system. Their dimensional stability directly governs measurement repeatability and positioning accuracy of equipment. Many equipment manufacturers achieve qualified precision during prototype commissioning, yet encounter precision drift after long-term operation in mass-production workshops. After eliminating assembly errors and air bearing system failures, fluctuating ambient temperature and humidity are often overlooked triggers. Most buyers only focus on the ultra-low thermal expansion coefficient of granite, but underestimate the composite deformation induced by the coupling effect of temperature gradients and continuous humidity changes. Based on abundant on-site tracking data from numerous projects, UNPARALLELED analyzes the mechanism of how temperature and humidity impact the long-term precision of granite reference parts from multiple perspectives, offering references for equipment selection, production line layout and component processing schemes.
Expansion and contraction caused by uniform temperature rise or fall can be predicted via material parameters. Nevertheless, local temperature gradients commonly seen in industrial workshops exert far greater adverse impacts than overall temperature variation. When one side of a granite platform is close to heat sources such as motors and light sources while the other side remains at ambient temperature, persistent temperature differences form inside the component. Uneven micro-expansion occurs in different zones and triggers slight warpage. Such deformation is reversible elastic deformation, yet it alters the flatness and straightness of the reference plane in real time. For large-size granite beams and wide-format worktables, longitudinal temperature gradients easily tilt the mounting reference of guide rails and directly lead to positioning errors of motion axes. Even if the temperature returns to the initial value, repeated exposure to gradient temperature differences over a long period will gradually restructure internal stress distribution of the stone and generate irreversible permanent deformation.
The influence of humidity on granite is often underestimated by the industry. Natural granite contains interconnected or closed tiny capillary pores. When ambient humidity rises, water vapor in the air slowly penetrates into pores and triggers slight moisture absorption expansion on the stone surface. When humidity drops, moisture evaporates and the surface shrinks. Under alternating dry-wet cycles, repeated expansion and contraction of the surface create deformation discrepancy between the surface and core of the component, inducing micro stress on the surface. The precision variation seems insignificant in short-term observation, yet years of cyclic action aggravate the deterioration of surface micro-waviness. For precision reference platforms equipped with air-bearing grooves and vacuum adsorption surfaces, moisture absorption inside pores also impairs surface sealing and disturbs the stability of air films. Although cleanrooms maintain constant temperature, humidity fluctuations generated by humidification systems keep exerting influences on granite reference components.
The coupling effect of temperature and humidity amplifies precision loss caused by single environmental factors. Under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions, water vapor penetration accelerates and moisture absorption expansion becomes more prominent. In low-temperature and dry environments, residual internal stress of stone tends to release more easily. Many automated production lines operate continuously in daytime and shut down at night, accompanied by synchronous temperature and humidity fluctuations between day and night. Granite reference components are subjected to cyclic loading of "expansion-contraction". Every restart of equipment brings subtle changes to the geometric state of the reference, requiring frequent calibration and lowering the effective uptime of production lines. In nano-scale optical inspection and wafer metrology scenarios, downtime losses caused by repeated calibration substantially increase customers' production costs.
The inherent compactness of mineral composition determines the innate capacity of granite to resist temperature and humidity interference. Ordinary granite with dense pores and loose mineral crystals provides more channels for water vapor penetration and suffers larger deformation triggered by temperature and humidity changes. UNPARALLELED® proprietary black granite undergoes strict raw material screening and features low porosity and dense fine-grained structure, effectively slowing water vapor intrusion and mitigating expansion and contraction from moisture absorption. Nevertheless, premium base material cannot fully isolate environmental impacts. Therefore, we adopt multi-stage constant-temperature aging treatment during processing to gradually release native internal stress of stone and reduce risks of permanent deformation under alternating environmental conditions.
Optimized processing design can also mitigate precision hazards derived from temperature and humidity. For long-travel beams and large-format platforms, we optimize wall thickness proportion to avoid inconsistent heat and moisture absorption rates resulting from uneven thickness. Gradient ultra-precision lapping is adopted for high-precision reference areas to reduce the subsurface machining damage layer and prevent water infiltration along microcracks. Installation suggestions are provided to customers upon delivery: avoid attaching reference components closely to heat-generating parts and reserve heat dissipation gaps. Where feasible, implement partial environmental isolation for core granite reference areas to reduce shocks brought by temperature gradients and humidity fluctuations.
Sustained long-term precision of granite reference components cannot rely merely on material performance. It requires coordination of raw material selection, stress-relief machining and on-site environmental control. Base materials set the lower limit of anti-interference capacity against environment, precision manufacturing processes reduce deformation risks, and reasonable workshop layout suppresses dramatic temperature and humidity fluctuations. UNPARALLELED continuously studies the correlation between environmental factors and deformation of granite components, and customizes ultra-precision granite reference components suitable for various working conditions. We help global optoelectronic and semiconductor equipment manufacturers reduce environment-induced precision drift, cut regular equipment calibration frequency and guarantee stable long-term operation of equipment.
