Walk through our workshop at the right moment and you will see something that looks almost old-fashioned. A large block of black granite sits on a stand. A man leans over it, moving a small plate in slow circles, stopping, checking, starting again. There is no screen, no readout, no green light. Just a hand, a surface, and a lifetime of knowing what a surface should feel like.
That quiet scene is, in its own way, the reason our customers can hold a tolerance that a machine alone cannot promise. This is a story about the people behind the precision.
Where the machine stops and the hand begins
Modern machining at UNPARALLELED is capable and fast. Five-axis machines, granite gantry cutters and precision grinders remove material efficiently and get a part remarkably close to its final shape. But "close" is not the same as "finished". At the last few microns and below, the geometry stops being a matter of cutting and becomes a matter of feel. That is where a machine hands over to a person, and where thirty years of experience does work that no program can replicate.
A master with more than thirty years at the stone
Our most senior lapper has spent more than thirty years doing this one thing. He did not learn it from a manual. He learned it the way craftsmanship has always been learned: standing beside someone older, watching, copying, making mistakes, and slowly building an intuition that becomes second nature. Over three decades his hands have touched an enormous amount of stone, and that volume of practice has turned a slow conscious skill into a fast instinctive one.
What hand lapping really is
Hand lapping is not polishing, and it is not guesswork. It is a controlled, deliberate process in which a hard reference plate is worked against the surface with a fine abrasive, removing microscopic amounts of material to bring the surface ever closer to true flatness. A lapper reads the surface by the marks and the resistance, decides where a high spot sits, and works it down in fractions of a micron. The goal is not a shiny surface. The goal is a surface that is genuinely flat, and flat in a way that can be measured and proved afterwards.
The walking electronic level
The old hands in the workshop describe our senior lapper with a phrase that has become a small legend here: he is a walking electronic level. Point him at a surface and he can tell you, before any instrument is switched on, roughly where the high and low spots are. It is not magic; it is the accumulated result of tens of thousands of cycles of touch, check and correct. An electronic level turns an angle into a number. He turns a feeling into a judgement, and the two usually agree.
What matters is how we treat that gift. His judgement is never the final word. It is the first word. It points the work in the right direction, saves time, and catches problems early - but every surface he produces is still verified with calibrated instruments before it leaves the building. Craftsmanship and measurement are partners here, not rivals.
Passing it on
A skill like this only survives if it is handed on. In our workshop the elder lappers work alongside younger ones, not in separate rooms. Apprentices start on simpler surfaces, watch the experts, and gradually take on harder work under supervision. Nothing about this is rushed, because precision cannot be hurried. The experience that took thirty years to build is being transferred on purpose, so that the next generation of masters is already in training while the current one is still at its peak.
Working with the machines, not against them
It is tempting to frame hand work and automation as opposites. In reality they are two halves of one process. The machines do the heavy, high-volume shaping quickly and consistently. The hands do the final, delicate correction that a machine cannot sense. Each covers the other's weakness: the machine never tires and never wavers, and the human never stops feeling. When the two are used together deliberately, the result is faster than pure hand work and far more accurate than pure automation.
Why this is still the barrier
Anyone can buy the same grinders and the same measuring instruments. What cannot simply be bought is a person who has spent thirty years learning how a surface should answer back. That accumulated judgement is genuinely difficult to copy, which is why hand finishing remains one of the real barriers in ultra-precision work. It is also why we are careful with it: special skills are treated as a responsibility, not a marketing line.
So when we say the precision business can never be demanding enough, it is not only a slogan about tolerance. It is a description of the people doing the work. The machines set the floor of what we can achieve; the hands raise the ceiling.
