Inside A Temperature And Humidity Controlled Workshop: How We Build A Stable Measurement Environment For Semiconductor Equipment

When a semiconductor customer visits, the questions rarely start with the granite. They start with the room. How stable is the temperature? How much does the floor vibrate when a truck passes outside? How clean is the air around the part during final assembly? These are not idle questions. For anyone building equipment that has to hold a tolerance in the micron and sub-micron range, the environment is not a backdrop to the work. It is one of the variables that decides whether the work is possible at all.

This article opens the door on our temperature and humidity controlled workshop and explains why each part of it exists.

Why the environment is part of the machine

A precision base is measured to fractions of a micron, but those numbers only mean something if they are produced under controlled conditions. Granite moves when the temperature moves, a table shakes when the floor beneath it shakes, and a surface can be contaminated by particles that no one can see. Ignore any one of these and a perfect part can still be rejected, or worse, shipped as good when it is not. For our semiconductor and optical customers, controlling the environment is the difference between a measurement that can be trusted and one that merely looks reassuring.

A floor built like a foundation, not a floor

Everything rests on the ground, so that is where the control starts. Our main workshop uses a hardened concrete floor with an approximately 1,000mm thick military-grade specification. That thickness and hardness do more than carry weight. A heavy, rigid slab resists the small deflections and the low-frequency movement that a lighter floor would pass on to anything standing on it, so the machines and the parts stay on a genuinely stable base rather than a slightly springy one.

Vibration isolation trenches

Even a strong floor can carry vibration in from outside, from a passing vehicle, a neighbouring machine or a person walking. To cut that path, the workshop is ringed with vibration isolation trenches roughly 500mm wide and 2,000mm deep. These trenches break the continuous path through which ground vibration would otherwise travel into the measurement and assembly areas. It is a simple idea, but it is the sort of low-tech, high-value detail that separates a workshop designed for precision from one that was simply built and then used for it. A trench is invisible in the finished product, yet it is the reason a delicate measurement can hold steady while life continues around it, and it is far harder to add later than to build in from the start.

Silent cranes and controlled movement

Handling large granite parts without disturbing the environment is a problem of its own, because a multi-tonne component has to be lifted and positioned without sending shock through the building. We use silent cranes designed to move heavy loads smoothly and quietly, so that the transport of a base does not become the very disturbance the building was designed to exclude. Moving a part safely and gently is part of keeping the measurements that follow valid.

Temperature and humidity control

The assembly and final-inspection areas are held under stable temperature and humidity, in a workshop that is designed to be cleanroom-compatible and modelled on the conditions semiconductor equipment is expected to meet. Stable temperature keeps a granite surface from growing or shrinking between the moment it is machined and the moment it is measured, so the number we record is the number the customer receives. Controlled humidity matters for the same reason: it limits moisture-related dimensional drift and keeps surfaces clean during the final stages, when the tolerance is tightest and the part is least forgiving.

Those conditions are not left to chance. The room is monitored and its environment is kept within a working band throughout the day, because a workshop that is stable in the morning and warm by the afternoon cannot be trusted to the same tolerance in both states. When a part is completed and verified, the conditions it was measured in are part of the record, so that a customer can see not only the result but the environment that produced it.

Clean, quiet, and verifiable

The result is a workshop where the things that quietly ruin precision are managed on purpose: temperature, humidity, vibration, and dust. That is what allows us to measure to sub-micron accuracy and to stand behind the result. If the environment could not be trusted, neither could the data, and without trustworthy data there is no real precision to sell. Environment control is not decoration around the manufacturing process. It is what makes the process mean anything.
